Today I fly to Hong Kong to pick up my flight back to Auckland on Air New Zealand ... on a staff ticket, hence the circuitous routing. It's also one of the rare instances AirAsia gets my money ... while I normally buy free or nearly-free tickets for my travels, its simply not possible during the festive season like this!

Bliss

Kek Lok Si (or Temple of Supreme Bliss) has been Penang's big attraction for decades. Like Vegas, it keeps renewing itself and expanding ... bad comparison perhaps.

The Chinese-Buddhist temple complex at Ayer Hitam is massive ... there are many shrines in addition to the old main pagoda built in an eclectic style ... Chinese, Thai etc all put together. More recently there is a ginormous statue of the Goddess of Mercy.

Wandering around the complex (and around Penang too) I couldn't help notice the number of Chinese beggars around. It has often been touted that Chinese are rich and the Malaysian underclass is from other ethnicities. Definitely not so!

Hubbing through Penang again

Today I said goodbye to family and flew to Penang [Penang-travel-guide-1307405] again ... my third time this trip. It has turned out to be a good plan as I love the food and the character. It's like an authentic version of Singapore ... Singapore with soul, perhaps? Yes, with a bit more chaos and litter too ... but after all this is Asia and Malaysia, right?

Coming to celebrate the Rabbit

It was another early morning start for me, to catch the 0800 flight from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur. Four hours later, I was in KL with a four hour transit before a shorter flight to Kuching [Kuching-travel-guide-1096915].

I will be with family for a week to celebrate Chinese New Year ... the Rabbit year.

White and whiter ...

Check-out from my Port Blair hotel (Andaman Residency) is rather early ... 8 am. This is typical for this town as incoming flights are in the morning.

Flying back to Chennai [Chennai-travel-guide-1310425] on Kingfisher, they have an inflight magazine like no other. It is purely about the glitz and glamour of Indian filmstars. Flicking through the magazine, all but one of the stars (and models in the adverts) look white ... like Europeans! The exception was a Tamil actor who is also somewhat fairer than the everyday Tamil that you meet.

It appears white is "in" ... it isn't too different amongst many Malaysian Chinese women who wear a second shirt back-to-front, to cover their arms from the sun while driving.

My divemaster had told me of this Indian woman who goes to Chennai for skin bleaching, coming back a shade lighter each time. I wonder if there's a name for this condition ... like eating disorders where people keep seeing themselves as fat ... or bodybuilders that never know when to stop building!

Being of peasant stock, I myself go brown very easily (fortunately I don't mind). There's a term for our skin tone in Malay ... hitam manis (sweet black) ... or black beauty, I guess.
